Refugio Kitchen: Healthy high energy fuel for the trail.

Walking the Camino in Northern Spain presents a feast of opportunity to find good, healthy food. Galicia is actually shortlisted to be named as one of the world's blue zones, and it's not lost on us that the preponderance of fresh, local food with vegetables and, of course, seafood are a reason why people in this region live so long.

When you're staying in hotels or albergues, breakfast often consists of simply coffee and toast with jam or tomato, so you may want to supplement with yogurt. If you want something more substantial when you stop in a cafe bar along the way, you'll find plenty of ensaimadas, as well as potato and cheese dishes and ample sandwiches for your day.

The Spanish tend to eat dinner late, so if you're looking for an early meal, then tapas can be a great option, and you can order this throughout the day. When staying in a smaller place, it is always a good idea to pop into the local supermarket to get some extra provisions for the evening or for the next day's trek, keeping your energy high and your focus sharp
